Seungmoon Song is an Assistant Professor of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering at Northeastern University. His lab, NeuMove, researches the neuromechanics of human movement to improve physical performance. Prof. Song’s vision is to develop digital motor clones for designing assistive devices and training protocols. He is a key contributor to MyoSuite, a MuJoCo-based musculoskeletal simulation model, and the MyoChallenge, a NeurIPS competition.

Prof. Song received his B.E. with summa cum laude in Electrical and Communications Engineering in 2008 from Information and Communications University (now merged into the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology). He received his M.S. in Electrical and Computer Engineering in 2010 from Virginia Tech, where he developed walking controllers for humanoid robots. He received his Ph.D. in Robotics in 2017 from Carnegie Mellon University and won the a Presidential Fellowship for his research on computational neuromechanical models of human locomotion. As a postdoctoral fellow at Stanford University, he conducted research on human-in-the-loop optimization frameworks for gait assistive exoskeletons and received the NIH Pathway to Independence Award (K99/R00). He joined Northeastern University as an Assistant Professor in 2022.

Lee, Byung-Yoon is a Lead Aerospace Engineer at NearthLab. He has developed a drone that combines AI and autonomous flight to automatically inspect wind turbines. This AI-powered wind turbine inspection drone is currently operating in many wind farms around the world. Currently, he is developing a small multicopter-type drone platform that can be utilized for multiple purposes. His interests include optimal control, autonomous flight, and systems engineering. He received his B.S. degree in electronic and computer engineering from Kyunghee University in 2010, and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in aerospace engineering from the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) in 2013 and 2018.

Our research broadly covers reinforcement learning and applications, control theory, optimization algorithms, and interplay among them. Recently, we have explored convergence analysis of reinforcement learning using control theories such as the linear and switching system models. The main advantage of our approach lies in its introduction of a unique switching system and control viewpoints. Building upon these perspectives, we have developed clear and simpler analysis frameworks for finite-time error bounds. These perspectives not only offer simplicity but also yield valuable insights into Q-learning and general reinforcement learning. The proposed techniques, based on the foundational principles of systems and control theory, render the overall analysis more accessible and intuitive particularly for people with a background in control theory.
